Responsible Gambling
Tools, helplines, and resources for keeping gambling safe — and for getting help if it has stopped being safe.
If you need help right now: Call the National Council on Problem Gambling helpline at 1-800-522-4700 (24/7, free, confidential), or text "HELPLINE" to 800-522-4700. The helpline is staffed in every US state.
Gamble for Entertainment, Not Income
Casino games are designed with a long-term mathematical edge for the house. That edge is real and unavoidable. The only sustainable way to play is to treat the money you wager as the cost of entertainment — the same way you would treat a movie ticket or a night out — and only play with funds you can comfortably afford to lose.
If gambling has stopped being entertainment and started feeling like a way to fix a financial problem, recover losses, or escape stress, that is the moment to take a break and seek support.
Warning Signs
Common signs that gambling is becoming a problem include:
- Spending more than you intended, or more than you can afford
- Chasing losses by betting larger amounts after a losing session
- Gambling with money meant for rent, bills, food, or other essentials
- Borrowing money or selling possessions to keep gambling
- Lying to family, friends, or employers about how much you gamble
- Feeling restless, irritable, or anxious when you try to stop
- Using gambling to cope with stress, depression, or other emotional pain
- Neglecting work, family, or social obligations to play
If three or more of these describe your recent behavior, please reach out to one of the help resources below.

Tools You Can Use Right Now
Self-exclusion
Most reputable casinos offer self-exclusion. You can ask the operator to lock your account for a set period (typically 6 months, 1 year, or 5 years) or permanently. Once activated, the casino must refuse you service for the duration of the exclusion. Look for "Responsible Gambling" or "Self-Exclusion" in the casino's account settings or footer.
Deposit and loss limits
Set a daily, weekly, or monthly cap on how much you can deposit or lose. Most licensed casinos provide this in the account section. The lower limit takes effect immediately; raising a limit usually requires a 24 to 72 hour cool-off period.
Time limits and reality checks
Set a maximum session length, or have the casino pop up a "reality check" reminder every 30 or 60 minutes showing how long you have been playing and your net result.
Software-level blocks
If casino-level tools are not enough, third-party software can block gambling sites at the device or network level. Common options include Gamban, GamBlock, and BetBlocker (free).
Bank-level blocks
Several US banks and most major card issuers (Chase, Bank of America, Capital One, and others) offer a "block gambling transactions" toggle in their app. Activating it stops your card from processing payments to any merchant coded as gambling.
Underage Gambling
Online gambling in the United States requires you to be at least 21 years old in most jurisdictions and 18 in others. We do not market to or knowingly accept readers under 21. Parents and guardians: tools like Net Nanny and OS-level parental controls can block gambling sites at the device level.
Our Editorial Position
We review casinos for adults who have already decided to gamble. We do not recommend gambling to anyone, encourage anyone to start, or suggest gambling as a path to income. If anything we publish reads as glamorizing gambling rather than informing decisions, please flag it via our Contact page.
